1. Definition
The Fluency Heuristic is a cognitive trap where a user mistakes the grammatical smoothness, clean typography, and authoritative tone of an AI output for objective truth, factual accuracy, or intellectual depth.
2. Use Case
Activated as a diagnostic warning when a user rates a highly polished but logically shallow text as superior to a fragmented but highly rigorous human draft.
3. Human Role
The user must recognize their emotional vulnerability to eloquent prose, interrupt the “halo effect” of good grammar, and reclaim the ability to evaluate arguments based purely on structural rigor.
4. AI Role
The system exposes this bias by generating beautifully written but factually contradictory statements, or by deliberately lowering its stylistic fluency to force the user to concentrate on the raw data.
5. Friction
The risk loop is broken by stripping the AI’s output of formatting, polite conversational wrappers, and persuasive rhetoric, forcing the user to evaluate bare propositions.
6. Risk
If this heuristic dominates, the user loses the ability to detect sophisticated misinformation, becoming easily manipulated by any system that outputs confident and stylistically perfect prose.
7. Observable Markers
Recovery is signaled when the user ignores the stylistic polish of the response and explicitly attacks the underlying logic or missing citations.
